A new mutated variant of Covid-19, named Omicron, has emerged and caused global alarm. It was first detected in South Africa, and has now spread to other parts of the world. 


Spread 

What's Causing concern amongst experts is the rate at which Omicron spreads. The chart below shows the share of total cases accounted for by each variant since their first detection, in South Africa.

Severity 

Research is ongoing to find whether Omicron is more severe than the prevailing Delta variant. So far, symptoms include extreme fatigue, but not O2 deficiency or loss in taste. 

Countries Response

Most of countries stop international flights and increase the vaccination in the country. Countries awaring their citizens about this new variant of Covid-19.

Share Market React  

Global markets have dipped due to the Omicron scare, which has slowed down the much anticipated post-lockdown recovery. 

Although, experts suggest that markets have overreacted to Omicron, as we currently don't know whether the vaccines would be effective against it.

So what should we do?

Don't panic. Let the research come in so that we know more about this new variant and how to combat it. Till then, wear masks, wash your hands, stay safe.
